Gilas Pilipinas ekes out a victory over USA Select, 78-74, in William Jones Cup 2015 in Taipei Taiwan. Calvin “The Beast” Abueva was in his usual Beast Mode to lift Pilipinas Basketball over a persistent USA squad with his 20 big Points and 8 Rebounds. Gary David and Sonny Thoss contributed 13 Points apiece.
Pilipinas Basketball preserved the win after a scary fourth quarter where USA cut the 18 Points Filipino lead down to four. USA outscored the RP Five 27 to 18 in the final frame and almost snatched the win if not for the three clutch baskets of Sonny Thoss in crunch time. Philippines outrebounded USA with 46 to 41 boards of US, and dished 11 against 7 Assists.
USA and Philippines both started the fourth quarter sluggish, making alot of missed shots and erratic plays on both ends.
Pilipinas widened the lead at the third frame capped by Tautuaa poster dunk. Abueva again led Pilipinas in scoring and hustle. Gilas shot 40.7% over 32.7% of USA in fieldgoals.
In the first half, De Ocampo and Abueva made a lot of damage against the USA. De Ocampo went 5 of 6 Freethrows for total of 7 Points. Abueva again showed why he is the energy guy of Gilas by dropping 10 big points at the half. Pilipinas had 22.2% Threepoint shooting and 40.6% fieldgoal shooting at the half. Gilas also made 24 Caroms against 16 of the Americans.
Marquin Chandler backstopped USA with 20 Points, while Cory Bradford had 19 and Calvin Warner for 17 Points.
Pilipinas battles Taiwan B next tomorrow as their final assignment.
