The LA Lakers will not object. Embattled Gilas Pilipinas may no longer have the Pro cagers SBP requested from the PBA, but will definitely get a legitimate Pro and a true NBA star in Fil-American Jordan Clarkson. What remains as a stumbling block for Pilipinas Basketball to field-in Clarkson is the green light of FIBA for Clarkson to represent the Philippines as a Filipino national in the upcoming FIBA Asia Championship 2015.
LA Lakers John Black (VP for Public Relations) as quoted through online correspondence with GMANews stated, “As long as it would not interfere with responsibilities of the Lakers, we would have no objection to any of our players playing for their national teams.”
“As long as national team play does not interfere with team requirements and there are no injury issues, it is up to the players whether or not to play,” added Black in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.
The combination of NBA bigman Andray Blatche and Jordan Clarkson in FIBA Asia will make the Philippine Basketball Team a fearsome contender to the title. A more cohesive Gilas unit will be reinforced for FIBA Asia. And the addition in the near future of young stars like Kobe Paras, Kiefer Ravena and Bobby Ray Parks together with Blatche and Clarkson is definitely worth watching-out for.
Clarkson if approved by FIBA will be able to play in the elimination phase of FIBA Asia in Changsa. He must however return a day before September 28 to the United States to honor his contract with the Lakers. In the event Gilas Pilipinas proceeds to the medal rounds, then RP team may no longer avail of Jordan’s services.
