FIBA World Basketball Record
° FIBA World Cup Pilipinas Basketball Team History
° The best place ever achieved by any Asian nation in FIBA Worlds belongs to the Philippines after it copped Bronze (3rd) in 1954 Rio de Janeiro FIBA World Cup. Legendary basketball superstar Caloy "Big Difference" Loyzaga led RP Team with 19.4 Points per game and was named to the Mythical Team. The Philippines ended second in their bracket behind Brazil and ahead of Paraguay to enter the next round. In the final round, the Filipinos lost against the United States by only 13 points. It is worthy to note that the Nationals led and scared a real USA Team at halftime 25-22. Philippines beat powerhouse teams Canada, Uruguay, Taiwan, France and Israel in that same round. Meanwhile, Lauro "The Fox" Mumar, another legend of Pinoy hoops, scored 9.9 Points per game.
° RP Team was bracketed with Uruguay, Puerto Rico and Bulgaria in the 1959 FIBA Worlds. The Filipinos ended the round at third, losing only against Bulgaria and Puerto Rico, and was disqualified from final round. In the classification round RP beat Egypt and Canada. In the battle for eight place, Philippines beat Uruguay. That 8th place finish would serve as the swan song of Carlos Loyzaga from FIBA Worlds.
° FIBA suspended Philippine Basketball for its inability to stage the 1963 FIBA World Championship after then President Diosdado Macapagal banned players from Yugoslavia and other communist nations to enter the Philippines.
° Philippines qualified for the 1986 FIBA Worlds but bombed out of the competition due to EDSA People Power.
° In 2014 FIBA World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas placed 21st and beat only one team in Senegal. It must be noted that all the losses of Pilipinas Basketball against Croatia, Argentina, Greece and Puerto Rico were all close games and could have gone either way. Naturalized player Andray Blatche ably steered the Filipinos with 21.2 Points and 13.8 Rebounds per game. Jimmy Alapag contributed 9.2 Points per game and led in Assists with 3.2. Coach Chot Reyes mentored the Filipinos after placing 2nd in FIBA Asia Championships.
