Puerto Rico fought tooth and nail against a game Team Gilas Pilipinas 77-73 and effectively ended the bid of the Philippines to enter the second round in FIBA World Cup 2014. JJ Barea ably led the Puerto Ricans with an explosive 30 points opposite the Asian powerhouse in Seville. Andray Blacthe and LA “El Tinyente” Tenorio paced RP Five with 23 and 18 markers apiece.

The Filipino setback was terribly painful being the fourth close upset in consecutive games. Jayson “The Blur” Castro failed to salvage the contest for the nationals as they fumbled yet again in the dying seconds of the game. RP Five shot a horrible 21.4% from the three point territory for a 6 out of 28 shooting against the 42.3% rainbow conversion by the South Americans.

Barea for his part said of the RP Team “First of all, I’d like to commend Gilas. They’re a great team. They have small guards who can make shots like me.” However, The much awaited showdown with the “Santos Strangler” Renaldo Balkman fizzled as the naturalized player of Puerto Rico managed a measly two points.

PUERTO RICO 77: Barea 30, Sanchez 13, Huertas 13, Rivera 5, Galindo 5, Diaz 4, Franklin 2, Clemente 2, Balkman 2.
GILAS PILIPINAS 73: Blatche 23, Tenorio 18, Lee 10, Alapag 6, Norwood 6, Castro 4, De Ocampo 2, Pingris 2, Aguilar 0, Chan 0, Fajardo 0.
