Pilipinas beat a complete super Iran Five for the first time in four years. Andray Blatche won the battle of giants as he led Gilas in the paint with 18 markers and brought Hamed Haddadi to early foul woes.

Blatche who was supposed to be slow and injured after hurting his ankle in the Japan game, showed no signs of pain nor any ill-effects and lifted Gilas against a pesky Iranian five.

Calvin “The Beast” Abueva who keyed the final foul of Haddadi, also hauled 13 points and 6 rebounds. His hustle and defense disrupted the offensive flow of Iran that was vital in the getaway fourth quarter.

Castro dropped 9 of his 26 markers in the important fourth quarter. Philippines made 12 steals that caused majority of the 16 turnovers of Iran. Gilas also mastered Iran by blocking 5 shots to 1. Surprisingly, RP Five outrebounded Iran 40 to 39 courtesy of the overall hustle the Filipinos showed.

In the first, it was a nerve racking quarter as both squads tried to feel out each other. Philippines raced to 17 to 11 lead courtesy of Castro heroics but Iran closed the gap and ended the quarter with the lead 22-25. Blatche played the quarter with no visible injury.

The second quarter was more of the same see-saw battle until Iran made an unanswered 9-0 blast for a 34-43 lead. Nikkhah led the Iranian run with a trey and fueled by consecutive Filipino turnovers. Fortunately, Ranidel “RDO” De Ocampo narrowed the gap to six with 1.5 second remaining to climb to 37-43 at the end of the half.

The third canto saw several lead changes with both teams exchanging dagger treys. Romeo, Castro and Blatche teamed-up to bring RP up ahead by five 65-60.

Gilas will next face India at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon.
