FIBA Asia 2015 News: Unheralded Palestine brings down Gilas Pilipinas Basketball, 75-73, for a surprise upset in FIBA Asia 2015 in Changsha China. Abu Shamala stormed the three point territory with his 26 monster markers and 15 boards. Andray Blatche led the lethargic Philippine Basketball Team with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

The Philippines suffered another international dressing down as unknown Palestine basketball came from 15 points down to upset Gilas Pilipinas. The Filipinos were lethargic and sloppy for most of the game as they failed to find any rhythm to nail down long shots or take advantage of the dribble drive system.

Top scorer Shamala made several three point shots in the fourth to bring Palestine ahead for the critical crunch time. Andray Blatche attempted the last bail-out trey, but was foiled courtesy of Sani Sakanini’s upset block in the final seconds, assuring the Palestine victory. Blatche was 1 of 7 from the threepoint line but was curiously tasked to shoot the trey instead of going for the easy two.

The Filipino dribblers shot a dismal 7 of 20 treys (23.3%) compared to Palestine’s 8 of 28 (28.6%). Of the 8 total trey output by Palestine, 6 came from Shamala who was 60% with 6 of 10 shooting from the arc.

The Palestinians played with only seven players the entire game and sat down five of its cagers. Still, the West Asians outrebounded Pilipinas 58 to 53 and passed better with 11 to 8 assists.

The third canto saw scrappy plays for both teams, with both committing 11 turnovers. Philippines can’t find anything to wrest the momentum from the sluggish pace which favored the Palestinians.

At the half, Palestine narrowed the lead to only five points. Blatche sat most of the 2nd quarter due to two early fouls incurred. Shamala led with 15 markers to lift Palestine to just a single digit deficit.

Philippines surged to an early 27-12 advantage in the first quarter with a team balanced scoring. Blatche led Gilas with 9 first quarter markers. Gilas outrebounded Palestine 12 to 6.

Terrence Romeo finished with 11 markers but settled for a 4 of 13 fieldgoal clip. Jayson William also contributed 10 points but failed to convert a trey for a 0 of 2 three points made.
