Smart Araneta Coliseum
Gilas Pilipinas Basketball burned the hoops late in the final frame to upset resilient New Zealand Wellington Saints, 84-81 late Saturday in the Master Game Face MVP Cup 2015 in Smart Araneta Coliseum. Terrence Romeo saved Gilas Pilipinas once more with his 12 Points in the 4th for a total of 18 Points with 4 of 8 shooting from the arc.
Romeo dropped a bomb in Araneta Coliseum as he made four dagger treys to lift Philippine Basketball Team against a resilient New Zealand in the final quarter. Romeo missed all his freethrows the entire game, but converted the two most important free shots for an 84-81 cushion lead.
Andray Blatche chipped-in 16 Points for the Filipino cause, while Calvin Abueva hustled and added 10 Points. Blatche is still nursing a minor injury from a prior game with Talk N Text.
In the third frame, Gilas was able to tie the ballgame 45-44 with a Marc Pingris follow-up. However, New Zealand widened the lead further, 54-65 with Gilas falling to early penalty due to fouls.
At the half, comebacking naturalized center Andray Blatche and Asi “The Rock” Taulava led Filipino dribblers with 8 Points respectively. New Zealand outrebounded Gilas with 24 against 13 Caroms. The Kiwis also shot better from the field with 55% to 42% fieldgoals.
Kevin Braswell paced the Saints with 23 Points in a losing effort. New Zealand was in a dejavu of sorts, leading the entire game but losing late in crunchtime to Gilas in Jones Cup 2015 behind Hontiveros heroics.
