Gilas Pilipinas strikes Russia Spartak down, 85-71, to notch the second victory in the William Jones Cup 2015 in Taipei Taiwan. In a highly physical ballgame, Philippine Basketball Team surged ahead in the third canto and never looked back. Veteran Gilas slotman Ranidel “RDO” Ocampo powered Pilipinas with 2 treys in the fourth to finish with 13 big Points, while the reliable Terrence Romeo contributed stellar 11 Points. Calvin “The Beast” Abueva, Matt Ganuelas Rosser and Moala Tautuaa all chipped-in 10 Points.

Pilipinas Basketball exploded from long range with 35% of 9 of 26 trey shooting to Russia’s 17%. De Ocampo led in three point shooting with 3 howitzer shots made out of 4 attempts. RP Team rotated the ball better with 16 Assists opposite 9.

The Philippines made a breakaway in the third quarter courtesy of Abueva hustle and JC Intal sniping. The Filipinos bamboozled the Russians with an 18 to 10 scoring. Abueva was all over the Russians the entire game, finishing with 8 monster total game rebounds. Also during the same quarter, RP Five made 44.4% Fieldgoals opposite 29.8% of Russia. RP also outrebounded the Russians with 35 against 23 Rebounds, and 10 more Assists to 5.




After a near free-for-all, the Philippines managed to stay ahead at the end of the half, 43-40. Russian big bear Alimdzhan Fedyushin was the instigator of several altercations, he also elbowed and bloodied Sonny Thoss at one point, and the referrees for their part never called a flagrant. Staying sharp as always, Romeo led the Gilas boys with 9 Points, while Moala Tautuaa dropped 8 Points in the second frame.

Russia is coming-off three consecutive victories in dominant fashion against USA, New Zealand and South Korea NT. On the other hand, Philippines will fight Japan NT at 3PM tomorrow afternoon.
